The rumors are true, Adult Swim‘s breakthrough animated series The Boondocks is making a comeback.
Huey, Riley and the gang will not be revived as a comic strip like previously teased, but rather as a reboot to the original show. Sony has green-lit a “complete re-imagining” of the series “for the modern era,” and it is currently in development alongside its creator, Aaron McGruder, who stepped away from the series prior to its fourth and final season.
The comic strip original launched in 1996 and was then brought to life on Adult Swim in 2005. Earlier this year, actor John Witherspoon spoke to Joe Rogan, revealing that the show would be making a return, with Witherspoon himself reprising the role of Granddad. “I’m on the cartoon. What is it? The Boondocks? I didn’t change my voice for The Boondocks,” Witherspoon says. “And they coming back,” he said. “The Boondocks is coming back. It’s one of the best cartoons I’ve ever been on.”
Earlier this year, a new comic strip based on The Boondocks was released and posted on Charlamagne Tha God’s Instagram account, written by McGruder and illustrated by artist Seung eun Kim, depicting America in 2019. Although there’s no news as to when the show will be arriving, keep it locked here as the story unfolds.
